There are Federal, State and Local building codes that must be adhered to. Codes require the contractor to build things to a certain safe specification. There are also codes regarding energy conservation. Permits help control what some people may want to do. They are required in order to do certain things or to have certain features. Inspections are required at various stages of construction and will help ensure the construction is done properly and to code. Visit your local Building Department Official early in the process. You find out vital restrictions early on make appropriate adjustments. You will also get a key list of requirements for submission and inspections. Fees are required to be paid at various points for various items (amounts and types will be set by your specific locality).
